It is far too easy to let your eating habits turn into a rut with the same set of meals showing up each week. Food should be fun and healthy, though. The next time you want to add some variety that also packs some nutritional power, try adding one of these to your daily menu.
1. Dark Chocolate
Not only is it delicious, but dark chocolate also has several health benefits. It is packed with antioxidants thanks to its high cocoa content. If that weren’t enough, each one-ounce serving of high-cocoa dark chocolate contains about 3 grams of fiber – comparable to a slice of whole-grain bread. If you’re looking for a little variety, try a gourmet spicy chocolate truffle to take the flavor up a notch.
Many cultures consider ginger as an effective natural medicine. It has been used to treat digestive and sinus issues for centuries. Its benefits appear to go beyond being able to quiet an upset stomach, though. Recent studies show that ginger helps to reduce inflammation of the colon, which is often a precursor to cancer.
Don’t be put off by their appearance. Oysters are loaded with nutrients like protein, iron, zinc, vitamins B12 and C. They are also an excellent source of omega 3 fatty acids which have been shown to boost brain function and reduce risks from certain types of cancer.
4. Peanut Butter
Peanut butter has long been viewed as a lunchtime staple for kids, but there is no reason to stop using it there. In fact, it is loaded with protein, fiber, vitamin E, and antioxidants. It also has a generous amount of potassium, which has been shown to lower risks associated with high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.
Eating healthy doesn’t have to be boring. You can give your regular diet a big health boost by adding a dash of ginger to a smoothie, indulging in a delicious chocolate confection or revisiting your childhood with some peanut butter and apples.
